Week 3Chapter 4: Gina any Q
3. When technology is used to support culturally and linguistically diverse students, it is often remedial. Some students find themselves using technology that has been designed for younger learners simply because the vocabulary level matches their current language acquisition. This types of remediation via technology can be frustrating to use. Imagine yourself living in another country, trying to learn its language, and being asked to learn via remedial software. What concerns would you have about this instructional approach? What other options might be found to avoid remediation when it instructionally unnecessary? If I were a learner in a foreign country trying to learn a curriculum in a foreign language I would not want to be re-mediated, I would want to be educated. So many times students are placed in front of computer screens and expected to learn new concepts. Sometimes this is effective but most of the time it is a waste of time. Computers do not teach, teachers teach. Software cannot replace teachers. It has been proven in a multitude of research that students who are taught at a low level are not being challenged. If a student needs to learn a language then full emersion in the language is a great technique that could be used to teach a new language. Chapter 5: Gina Q1 Chapter Five
In order to be an effective technology teacher, you must first understand the technology you are using. While computers are marvelous tools it should not be forgotten that they are machines. And all machines must be maintained and updated in order to keep them from becoming obsolete. The older a PC is the slower its processing speed becomes. Teachers who use technology as their primary resource have to make sure that all of their devices are up to date and can process and receive data quickly. Not only is it important to update devices it is important to keep the users skills up to date. Technology changes so rapidly and it is important to stay current with all the necessary upgrades and updates. Chapter 6: Gina Q2, Chapter Six 2. Some teachers believe that too much emphasis is placed on computers and other technologies in the classroom. Considering the technologies you have learned about in this chapter, do you agree or disagree? Defend your view. Technology in the classroom is very important. Chapter 6 discusses many different technologies in the classroom such as: mobile devices, electronic whiteboards, tablets, digital cameras, scanners, e-readers and video conferencing. Some of these tools allow the teacher and students to interact and communicate when they are not even the same state. Technology has allowed learning to take place around the world with a click of a button. These new tools allow materials to be presented in new and innovative ways that is appealing to the learner. Technology in the classroom allows 21st learner to develop skills that is very necessary for the tech based world of work. Technology also adds more interactivity to a lesson. Finally, technology encourages the students to collaborate and discovers at the click of a button. I believe that tech based classrooms can improve the learning environment which in turn promotes learning. All rights reserved © 2019 Gina Pepperman.

Thank you for your thoughts Gina. I see increasingly teachers trying to update their equipment only t to be told there was not enough money. One approach that schools have been adopting lately that has help mitigate this problem is to leverage financing an residual values. For example a school could lease iPads or Macs for three years. After two years often times the residual value of the technology in the open market is enough that the school is able to sell those devices, payoff the last year of the financing and get new devices with new warranties. This also helps the district by placing a line item in the budget for technology that is predictable.

Gina, You are so right! We can use computers and technology to assist with applications and thought processes, but students need an actual teacher in the classroom. Often students get frustrated with computers and give up or stop trying to accomplish the goal of the lesson. Having that actual person students can ask questions or get examples can make a world of difference. Students must learn how to function in the 21st century using computer. Computer programs, languages and even the simplest task can assist students in becoming better employee's for the future.
